RECEPTION IN HONOUR OF
Ambassador Massoud Maalouf hosted a reception in the Embassy Residence on 15 September 2009, to honour the Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Ottawa Professor Mona Nemer.
The reception was attended by Senator Pierre De Bané and Deputy Maria Mourani, as well as Senator Kelvin Ogilvie who was sworn-in as Senator earlier that day. Also attending the reception were Ambassadors Dr. Jamil Sakr of Syria and Mr. Nabil Barto of Jordan, the Lebanese Consul General in Montreal Mr. Khalil El Habre, as well as many diplomats from Arab Embassies. Deans of different faculties and professors from the university, as well as members of the Lebanese Community in Montreal and Ottawa were also among the guests.
In his welcoming speech, Ambassador Maalouf mentioned the most important achievements of Professor Nemer, as a student, a professor and a researcher in numerous universities and institutions, especially in the fields of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology. H.E. underlined the role of Professor Nemer in establishing the Lebanese Academy of Sciences with other prominent personalities of Lebanese origin and her discoveries in the medical field leading to improve the quality of life of so many people. Then Ambassador Maalouf handed Professor Nemer an award in recognition of her achievements.
In her speech, Professor Nemer thanked the Ambassador for this initiative and said that she was a proud Canadian and a proud Lebanese. She also paid tribute to Senator Ogilvie who has been her professor and she thanked the numerous guests for taking the time to attend this event in her honour.
